- I bought a bunch of cheap disks the other day, needed to
- format them, and got the urge to kill two birds with one stone, so
- I performed an informal benchmark test of a few fast formatters,
- disk checkers, and other utilities. Some of the results suprised me,
- so I thought I'd share them with you all, and see if they are
- reproducable.
-
- I am running the tests on a PC-XT clone with an 8088-2,
- and some nameless disk drive (whatever MicroSmart was putting in their
- machines this past spring). The time is in seconds (rounded to the
- closest 1/10th of a second averaged over two trials).

- When it came to checking for the program's abilities to detect bad
- sectors and flag them properly I was stonewalled. I formatted a disk
- that QDR said had 2 bad sectors - DOS said the same thing, and
- SDF (the first time) found no errors, then both, then only the latter
- bad sector on two more tests. CFormat claimed to lock out 10,240
- bytes, and then an additional test with QDR claimed no bad sectors.
-
- Further tests with all of the format programs found no errors, and
- the disk tested clean with Scavenge v1.00 and Diskscan. Frankly,
- I am at a loss for words --- I wasn't aware that normal wear could reform
- marginal disk media (which is my guess as to what had happened).
-
- After conducting this tomfoolery I decided it was time to get back to
- the work I was doing, and let it lie.
-
- I would appreciate exchanging info with anyone else interested in
- these results, who have used other fast format utilities, and who
- have performed similar tests of their own.
